Chronic Tension? How to Release Stress That Gets Trapped in the Body

How stress can show up as jaw tension, shallow breathing, headaches, and fatigue — and why somatic exercises can help.

We often treat stress like a purely mental problem. We tell ourselves to think more positively or change our mindset. But stress does not just live in thoughts. It can settle into muscles, breathing, digestion, posture, and sleep.

Stress has a physical shape

When pressure lasts for a long time, the body can stay in a low-grade fight-or-flight state. Shoulders creep upward, breathing becomes shallow, the jaw tightens, and the body braces for an impact that never quite arrives.

Over time, these physical symptoms of burnout and stress can become familiar: headaches, fatigue, stomach discomfort, restlessness, or the wired-but-tired feeling that makes rest difficult.

Speak the body’s language

If you want to release stress from the body, logic alone is usually not enough. You cannot talk a tight muscle into relaxing. You often need to give the body a different signal.

Brief somatic exercises can help. Try tensing your shoulders as hard as you can for five seconds, then dropping them on a long exhale. Shake out your hands and arms for thirty seconds. Place a warm hand on your chest and slow your breathing enough to feel your stomach rise and fall.

Small signals count

The aim is not to force instant calm. The aim is to interrupt the braced shape your body has been holding.

When the body receives even a small signal of release, the mind often gets a little more room to follow.
